Bobby Boswell, MLS Defender of the Year, from D.C. United, stopped to chat with us from Hawaii, where he's visiting Pearl Harbor as part of a
two-week tour of U.S. military bases with three United teammates. See what he had to say by checking out the chat transcript below.

Bobby is here to chat with us now.
Bobby Boswell
Good to be here. Let's answer some questions.
Nick from Washington
Bobby - Congrats on the great year. I see big things ahead for you and D.C. United. What does it mean to you to be able to take part in a trip like this and see what our service men and women are doing for their country?
Bobby Boswell
I think it's I'm very fortunate to be able to go on this trip and to see what our military people are doing. A big thing is also the kids that they have on these bases. They travel around with their parents, and it's good to be able to put on soccer clinics. It's fun to get to come out here and do what we do.
Tracey from Fairfax, Va.
Have you gotten more national attention from being named Defender of the Year or being nominated Cosmo's hottest bachelor?
Bobby Boswell
That's a good question. I honestly think I've gotten more from the Cosmo thing. But I think a lot of people notice the Cosmo thing and they look you up. A lot of people who see the Cosmo thing don't know about soccer. The ones who know soccer know about Defender of the Year.
Colby from Sedalia, Mo.
I'm glad to know you're a patriot! Which is better, the Marines or the Army Rangers?
Bobby Boswell
I don't think I'm qualified to answer that, but I think they're both very important and they're both pretty awesome in terms of the training you have to go through to become either one.
Tim from Springfield, Va.
Bobby how are you? What is your goal next season and for the team itself?
Bobby Boswell
Hi Tim, I'm good. I think the goal for next year is to help the team win trophies. We're in a lot of tournaments, so it would be nice to win some of these. As an individual it's just to help the team where I can and improve.
Stevan from Gaithersburg, Md.
Since Josh Gros did some training at Quantico (Marine base), I'm curious: Have you ever had any training experience at a military camp? (And working under Piotr Nowak doesn't count!) Props to United and MLS from this Army brat for putting together this tour.
Bobby Boswell
I've never had any military training, although for me I'm always curious about it because my father was in the Air Force and my grandfather was in the Navy. He was actually stationed at Pearl Harbor where we're staying now, but not during the attack.
Charles from Tampa, Fla.
Have you had a chance to go to the USS Arizona Memorial and the Submariners Base Memorial at Pearl Harbor?
Bobby Boswell
I think we're going to take a tour of the Arizona later today, and we didn't do the Submariners Memorial on this trip, but when D.C. United was here for the Aloha Cup, a bunch of us toured the USS Key West, which was a submarine. Hi Dad.
Susan from New York
What do you think of nicknames? And what do you think about being called Roboz?
Bobby Boswell
I think nicknames are cool, as long as they're fitting. I think you can't necessarily make up a nickname unless it fits the person. If you want to call me Roboz, you can call me Roboz.
Jess from San Francisco
Who are your sporting heroes and why?
Bobby Boswell
Well, I'd say Michael Jordan was. The reason was he had all of this hype and attention, but he always backed it up. Everyone knew at the end of the game who was going to have the ball and who was going to take the shot. More often than not, he stepped up and he made it. As an athlete myself, you want to be in those situations and perform the way you can. I think he always did. And he was a good teammate from what I saw.
Lynn from Raleigh, N.C.
Were you sad to miss out on the Water Wars?
Bobby Boswell
Yeah, I was. I did a little bit of work with Roche from DC 101, and he had asked me if I would like to participate. Unfortunately with my schedule, I was unable to. I'm glad Nick Rimando was able to, and he had a lot of fun with it.
Alex from Waldorf, Md.
What are your practices like? Lots of hardcore running and training, or do you guys actually take your time and have fun? Like scrimmaging each other and stuff?
Bobby Boswell
They're very intense. Peter demands intensity, but we're playing a sport that we love, so it's almost always fun.
Ted from Tampa, Fla.
Have you found any young Brian Chings in your youth soccer camps yet?
Bobby Boswell
They have some very talented kids out here. They've been able to do everything we've asked them and more in the clinics we've run.
Denny from Montreal
How do you enjoy spending the holidays such as Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's?
Bobby Boswell
Only my uncle Todd celebrates Boxing Day in my family. The rest of us, we spend Thanksgiving and Christmas as a family, eating food and hanging out. New Year's I spend with my brother and my friends.
Linda from Fairfax, Va.
Do you have a desire to play in Europe?
Bobby Boswell
I do have desire. Everyone dreams of playing in games that mean a lot. The biggest games are World Cup games followed by Champions League games. If you can have an opportunity to go over there and show your stuff and participate in those games, more power to you. Right now, I'm not focused on Europe. I'm focused on MLS and trying to improve as a player.
Emily from Fairfax, Va.
I was playing FIFA 07 the other day and somebody offered me $1.4 million to buy Josh Gros. Do you think Josh is worth $1.4 million? What would you pay for him?
Bobby Boswell
It depends on who offered that money. Josh enjoys his life the way it is now, and I don't know if money is that big of a factor for him. For the work he puts in and the effort he brings every day, I think he's worth that, for sure.
Warren from Chicago
If you lose Brian Carroll to France, how do you think Jeff Carroll or Clyde Simms will do in his place?
Bobby Boswell
I think a guy like Brian Carroll is very hard to replace, first of all. However, I'm very confident that someone like Clyde Simms or Jeff Carroll can fill that hole. Clyde is a very different player from Brian, but he too has national team experience and has shown that he can play with the best. So I'm very confident in the ways thing would go if Brian ends up leaving.
Scott from Washington
How much importance do you put on showing well in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup?
Bobby Boswell
I think it's huge. These are tournaments that are outside of MLS where you represent your league and in a way your country. Like I said earlier, we're out to win tournaments and bring some more hardware back to D.C.
Kim from Reston, Va.
Bobby, it's awesome that you're doing this tour for our folks in the Pacific. Have you seen that your GUTS opponent has been found?
Bobby Boswell
I was unaware that Robin "The Lizard" Rexroat was located. I'm glad she has come out of hiding, and hopefully she will give me another shot at the title.
Mario from Washington
Hey, I'm from D.C. and I was just asking your overall opinion on the season and where do you see the team going from this point on?
Bobby Boswell
I think we had a strong year, and we became more of a group. I'm glad we won the Supporters' Shield, however, I feel that we fell short in the Open Cup and MLS Cup. Those are things we're looking to change for next year.
MLSnet.com
Thanks for your time. Any final thoughts?
Bobby Boswell
I just want to say to all of my fans and soccer fans, thank you for all of your support this year. I think the fans are showing that the league is doing well and hopefully it will continue to do well. I hope everyone is enjoying their day. I've got a tough day of snorkeling and beach-ing ahead of me.
