2008 Coaches of the Month

Each month, the Coaches Association selects a D.C. United Coach of the Month to recognize someone who goes "above-and-beyond" their role as a coach and to show appreciation for their dedication to the sport of soccer and for teaching the youth in our community.

In addition, the Coach of the Month receives:

• Recognition in the CA eNews
• Two (2) free tickets for the first D.C. United game in the month he/she won
• Recognition at that game on the Jumbotron, announcement over the PA system and electronic scoreboard
• Automatic entry to win a grand prize at the end of the D.C. United season

Do you know someone who deserves the honor of "Coach of the Month?" You can nominate him or her by sending an e-mail here that explains why you are nominating this person and why he or she deserves the award.

JUNE: BOB GANNON

Holding a National "D" level license, "Coach Bobby" has been coaching youth sports off and on for 20 years, the last 8 concentrating on his son's various sports teams. Coach Bobby first got into soccer when his son wanted to play for the local Sterling Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) team at age 6. He knew nothing of the game. "At that age group, running to the correct goal was an accomplishment." Eight years later, Coach Gannon's SYSA U14 BOYS "SCOTTISH MAFIA" is a force to be reckoned with compiling an impressive 29-4 record in the past 4 seasons playing in the local Suburban Friendship League (SFL) which encompasses teams from all over Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. more »

MAY: JEFF SPONEL

Jeff has been coaching for six years now; five of those have been as an assistant for his two sons' teams. Last fall he took the reins of a U12 team for Fern Creek Optimist and discovered that there is a lot more to do going from an assistant to a head coach. He has been amazed and found new respect for other coaches given the time he devotes to constructing practices, strategies, lineups and substitution patterns. When he isn't busy with his U12 Screaming Eagles, he is out on the field with his middle son as an assistant coach for the U6 Dragons. more »
